Inspired by L’Arche: Lessons in Shared Life and Lasting Community

In our ongoing journey of exploring possible future living scenarios for our daughter, we’ve been fortunate to come across organizations and communities that give us both ideas and inspiration. One of those is L’Arche—a global federation of communities where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together.

We first learned about L’Arche some time ago in our research, and right away there was much about the model that appealed to us. The mixed community of people with and without intellectual disabilities, its faith-based roots, and the maturity of an established model supported by a strong network both nationally and globally—all of these stood out. When the opportunity came up to visit a L’Arche community in person, we knew it was something we wanted to do.

Our Visit to L’Arche Portland

On a recent trip to Oregon, we had the opportunity to visit L’Arche Portland. It was terrific. We met the Executive Director/Community Leader and several team members, and their hospitality immediately made us feel at home. Being in the community space, seeing how it all comes together, gave us a real window into what life at L’Arche looks like.

During our visit, we also met a Dutch couple who had helped found L’Arche Haarlem in the Netherlands many years ago. They are spending a year traveling across the United States, visiting L’Arche communities from coast to coast. Visiting with them was a pleasure and it reminded us of the global reach of this community and highlighted the deep love and commitment that bind it together across cultures and generations.

People Along the Way

Our visit to Portland built on several conversations we’ve had with L’Arche leaders and supporters along the way. We’ve spoken with leaders from L’Arche Boston North and the L’Arche USA national office, each of whom shared their time and passion generously.

These conversations helped us understand what life in a L’Arche community is really like. The people we’ve met have inspired us with their commitment to this model—and to the individuals who live it every day.

What We Take Away

We’re still exploring what the future could look like for our daughter, but visits like this give us both perspective and hope. L’Arche is not just a model on paper—it’s a lived reality, full of people building relationships, sharing life, and growing together.

Our time in Portland confirmed for us that L’Arche is not only well-established but also deeply human at its core. It’s a place where belonging, dignity, and love are lived out through relationships and in daily routines. And for families like ours, that’s a vision worth holding on to.
