Creating a Life with Friendship, Purpose, and Independence: A Family’s Journey Toward Shared Living

As parents of a vibrant, funny, and deeply loving 22-year-old daughter with special needs,
we’ve always tried to give her a life filled with joy and connection. She brings so much light into our world — always ready to laugh, always eager to make others laugh. But we’ve also faced a quiet, growing question:

How do we create a future for her that she deserves — one that’s rich in friendship, purpose, and independence?

Like many families, we’ve tried a variety of support options over the years. For a while, we hired "buddies" — kind, well-intentioned people to spend time with her. Some were wonderful. One has been with us for years and built a beautiful connection with her. But many were short-term or inconsistent. And that inconsistency has been difficult — emotionally, socially, and developmentally.

So, we decided to try something new.

A New Approach: The Roommate-Companion Model

Instead of rotating support, we invited someone to live in our home — a roommate who is close to our daughter’s age and who also provides part-time caregiving and companionship. Someone who could be present, consistent, and real.

The idea wasn’t to “hire help.” It was to create a relationship. A friendship. A shared life experience.

We imagined a young woman who could be a roommate, a motivator, a teammate in building routines and skills — and someone who genuinely enjoys spending time with our daughter. In return, she’d get a private room, free rent, meals, and a modest stipend — but more importantly, she'd be part of something meaningful.

And it’s working.

After just a few months, we’ve seen a noticeable difference in our daughter’s energy, confidence, and happiness. She’s more engaged. More independent. And there’s a sense of mutual respect and joy between her and her roommate that’s hard to describe — but beautiful to witness.

Why We’re Sharing This

We know we’re not alone. There are many families out there, wondering how to support their adult children with disabilities in ways that are human, dignified, and emotionally fulfilling.

We’re not a program. We’re not experts. We’re just a family trying to build something personal — a home-based, self-funded model that’s centered in real connection, natural friendship, and shared growth.

And we’re learning a lot.

If you’re a caregiver, a parent, a sibling — or someone exploring new ways to support adults with developmental disabilities — we’d love to share ideas, resources, and experiences. This model may not be for everyone, but it’s been deeply meaningful for us, and it may spark ideas for others, too.

Let’s reimagine what supportive living can look like — together.

One home. One heart. One relationship at a time.
